Hi, I’m Emma!
I love writing and have always wanted to commit it to it full-time, with some natural oh-my-god-can-I-do-this trepidation. Taking hold of the trepidation and converting it into yes I can, I left teaching so that I could write full time.
Introducing me, in my natural habitat
What do I write and why?
I love writing flash fiction because of its brevity and how this forces you to select your language.
I love writing poetry because of its structural versatility and how it reflects complex emotions and experiences in a condensed manner.
I love writing short stories because there is a pre-emptive sweetness in knowing both writer and reader will reach the end of the story. Novels are wonderful gifts but in our hectic lives, a novel can creak on for months. Short stories are easier to consume, creating a more consistent relationship with stories. Short stories also feel a little like writing a fable, what message am I sending to the reader with this story?
Why should you read my writing?
It is my biggest passion and so what I write is carefully crafted.
I want my writing to have an impact on you and make you reflect on life and your experiences.
When I read, I want the writer to spoil me with their words and shake me up, so that I feel I have gained something; even if it’s a little realisation, a new word, a character I can see myself in, a setting I can’t stop imagining.
I love experimenting with language and making sense of the world through it and doing it as authentically as possible.
