Good Notes #1
Small but salient wanderings; a collection of resources spanning literature, art and culture
Hello everyone!
This is the first post of ‘Good Notes’, a new feature in my newsletters that will share recent finding relevant to writing and culture. I hope you enjoy Good Notes and find it interesting. If you enjoyed this and know some of your friends might, feel free to share the article with them!
1. Ear candy: Podcast- In Writing- Wendy Erskine, short story writer. Leading me to her short story Gloria and Max, which I loved, for me, it felt like a pleasing balance of detail and brevity, something I am trying to adopt more so into my work
2. Visual: I am obsessed with the Tate. It will be a life-long love affair. I didn’t know who Aliza Nisenbaum was, but I am really glad I came across her. I love her portrayal of different communities and how human-centric her work is
3. Writing advice: why the shitty first draft is important and there is no shame in naturally, writing a lousy first draft
4. Reflecting: Now that we aren’t running around in the maddening race to get things done in the office-centric way we worked, we have all developed better ways of working. The School of Life explores times when we are at optimum productivity which looks very different to working round the clock, thankfully
5. All hail: I am gobbling up Angela Carter’s Night at the Circus and am finding myself relishing the empowered, flamboyant female lead. I am being taken through a kaleidoscope of storytelling and appreciating Carter’s performance in language. Immerse yourself in an online exhibition of Carter’s glorious work
6. Swings and roundabouts: A great literary magazine, despite it feeling a little like Fort Knox to get published (though also spurs me on to keep experimenting with writing, so not entirely a bad thing), but there are lots of beautiful pieces of writing on there, I read this and think it’s a brilliant example of short story writing, go Maeda Ali!
